Bruxism and Dental Apprehension

Bruxism is the unconscious habit a person has when they squeeze or grind their teeth, both day and night.

More and more cases of bruxism are derived from states of stress and tension.

Bruxism occurs when the upper and lower teeth are tightened generating strong pressure.
Some symptoms of suffering it are:
• Headache on a regular basis
• Anxiety during the day
• Insomnia processes
• Mandibular and ear pain
• Greater sensitivity to cold or heat
• Notice that the jaws are disengaged when opening and closing the mouth

The discharge splint is the most common treatment for bruxism due to its great effectiveness. It is a transparent resin plate that is custom designed for the mouth of each patient and placed in one of the two dental arches. This is achieved by preventing the upper teeth from coming in contact with the lower ones, thus ending the wear and tear that occurs when squeezing or rubbing against each other, which can cause jaw, head and even pain on the back of the neck.

The treatment of bruxism and dental clenching tries to reduce pain, prevent permanent dental damage and reduce the grinding of the teeth to the maximum. Depending on each case, the treatment can be based on one of the following techniques (or a combination of these):

· Selective carving or occlusal adjustment
· Discharge splint
· Prosthetic rehabilitation
· Orthodontics
· Physiotherapy: Muscle exercises
· Pharmacological treatment in acute phases
· Dry and humid heat
· Acupuncture
· Dental compounds for injuries caused by wear
